Cinapsis Goes Live Across 11 Midlands ICBs, Driving Major Impact in NHS Eyecare

We’re excited to announce that Cinapsis has gone live in all 11 ICB regions within the Midlands contract. Our platform is supporting over 80 NHS Trusts and Independent Service Providers (ISPs) in managing eyecare referrals bi-directionally between referrers and  providers . More than 130,000 patients have already benefited from streamlined care, improving eyecare referrals  for a population of circa 11 million residents.

For years, eyecare referrals have relied on slow, inefficient paper-based methods. Optometrists would send physical referrals - sometimes with low-quality black-and-white images - to specialists, leading to weeks-long delays, lost paperwork, and incomplete clinical information. This outdated process not only wasted valuable time but also made it harder for specialists to make informed decisions, often requiring additional follow-ups before treatment could begin.

Others relied on unsecure email to transfer patient data, which lacked an audit trail and posed risks to patient confidentiality.

By digitising and securing referrals, patients will no longer have to endure unnecessary delays, and specialists will receive comprehensive, high-quality information at the point of referral, improving both efficiency and outcomes.

Cinapsis’s EeRS platform is built with clinicians in mind, offering a seamless, NHS-integrated solution that makes eyecare referrals faster, smarter, and more effective.

  • Instant Digital Referrals: Optometrists can submit referrals electronically, reducing waiting times and ensuring specialists receive all necessary information immediately.
  • System Integration: Optometry practice patient record integration enables data to be imported from patient records, improving accuracy and the speed in which cases can be created.
  • High-Quality Clinical Data: Each referral can include high-resolution images and full patient details, allowing specialists to make informed decisions right from the start.
  • Improved Patient Experience: Faster triaging means quicker appointments and reduced stress for patients.
  • Reduced Administrative Burden: Administrative and clinical teams spend less time on paperwork and more time delivering care.
  • Efficient use of resources within Acute settings: Ophthalmologists or Orthoptists  can triage patients on EeRS resulting in only patients that need to be seen being booked for appointments, those who don’t are sent back to the referring optometrists, with a recommended course of action.

With the platform now live across all 11 Midlands ICBs,,providers are looking to further utilise Cinapsis for example within emergency cases, enabling patients to be redirected more efficiently to Eye Casualty when appropriate.
